Is animal testing still very inhumane?

I know it's still a very bad life for a primate to live in a small cage. But what I want to know is if they are given anesthesia in order to feel the least amount of pain possible, and basically, if they are treated as humanely as possible. I know years ago it was really, really terrible for animals in testing labs. But has it changed. I was just watching a doentary on National Geographic about Chimps in captivity, supposedly the majority of Chimps owned as pets end up in labs because the owners can't handle them anymore. That just broke my heart because I love animals, and these primates are so close to humans. I just think it really sucks
